The problem of leadership - especially for those seeking equality, diversity, justice - has indeed become problematic in these perilous times. Especially in the South. Who shall lead?

Dear Professor Watson, You have raised an important ethical question. Should adult leaders ask teenagers to make potentially life-altering decisions? I do not equate declining an athletic scholarship and NIL financial resources from a member institution of the Southeastern Conference to military recruitment. Nevertheless, similarities exist. As the late folk singer and songwriter Phil Ochs wrote, "It's always the old to lead us to the wars. It's always the young to fall." (© 1965. Phil Ochs, "I Ain't Marching Anymore" ASCAP)

Is there a reason why you specifically refer to these athletes as “young men” multiple times throughout the piece? Especially considering the many successful women’s teams found throughout the SEC. Even the most cursory knowledge of recent college athletics should bring the South Carolina women’s basketball team to mind. Not to mention, the political involvement of Black women in general. To be honest, I could not take this seriously after such a glaring oversight. How telling.

The organzations in questions were targeting young men. That is why I used the term men.

Where and how are they targeting Black men? Their own statements and website refer to “athletes” only. There is a picture of a woman with a basketball on the Out of Bounds website. While they do put an emphasis on football and basketball, that wouldn’t exclude women.

Good writing- Ego has to be subordinate to allow collaboration within a community. Leadership is not only position but it requires the ability to inspire others to follow. Faith and political leaders need to understand the importance of collaboration and understanding of their role. It’s more than a nice suit or articulate sermon.

Exactly! Designer suits, flashy, press conferences and eloquent, yet very diplomatic rhetoric does not usually result in meanigful change.
